Philosophy Wire: Muscle cells. Universe. Antinomies. Existence.

Engineers have grown the first functioning human muscle from non-muscle cells - skin cells reverted to their primordial stem cell state. The ability to start from cellular scratch using non-muscle tissue will allow scientists to grow far more muscle cells, provide an easier path to genome editing and cellular therapies, and develop individually tailored models of rare muscle diseases. [1] Muscle cells from skin cells. Life from non-living particles. Universe created from nothing. The greatest the scale the greatest the antinomy. The greatest the paradox, the easiest to believe and digest. But the universe is a weird place. There is order behind the chaos. We live in an irrational cosmos. And yet we know that it is logical. Think beyond what your limited logical perception dictates. And see that there is no deception at all. Nothing is full of something. Death is full of Life. Skin cells are essentially the same as muscle cells. Believe the irrational. And you will see that there are no antinomies at all. Moving that hand. In a lifeless body. Inside a dark universe. Laughing with death…

Philosophy Wire: Jupiter lights… the flaws of set theory.

Jupiter's intense northern and southern lights pulse independently of each other according to new UCL-led research using ESA's XMM-Newton and NASA's Chandra X-ray observatories. [1] Things being part of something else. Things behaving as if they are not part of anything else. Tautologies and antinomies. Sets and individual irrational values. Everything as part of everything. Anything as part of nothing. There are no sets. Except One. Which is a set. And at the same time it is not…

Philosophy Wire: Brain, analysis, context…

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2014-04-19]: Scientists analyze brain activity. [1] They think they find things but they forget something very fundamental: Observations are always interpreted by a brain. Their brain, the patient's brain, my brain, your brain. How can you interpret what you think by thinking? Circular antithesis. Self-reference. The essence of our existence. Our curse and our wisdom at the same time. Let's accept them...

DIVISION BY ZERO (1/0 = One)

A number cannot be divided by zero. This is what mathematics today claim. But think again. Some years ago, it was not possible to have a number whose square results in a negative number. But then… we thought… why not? And now we have imaginary numbers with tons of applications. Zero is a useful tool and a curse. It represents “nothing”, which philosophically does not exist. But yet, we see it every day in our calculations. Everything is a matter of definition and the sentence “division by zero does not have any meaning” is such a case. If we decide to give meaning to it, then it will instantly have. In a sense we have already allowed division by zero. Consider cases when we want to find the limit (lim) of a fraction whose denominator tends to zero. Mathematics have a great deal of weird theories – why not a theory where division by zero is allowed? The limit is only set by us. And even though many think that allowing division by zero we introduce many inconsistencies in mathematics, consider this: According to Gödel no theory based on specific set of axioms can prove its consistency. Could a theory full of antiphasis be actually the most consistent theory of them all? Thinking logically never served the progress of Science. Zero entails antinomies. And life is full of them. Perhaps the best way to describe the world would be to simply accept what our radical heart want but our cold stubborn logic rejects… Discover the world! Divide by zero!

Philosophy Wire: I tell the truth that I am a liar! Don’t you believe me?

cigarettePhilosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2012-11-28]: A federal judge on Tuesday ordered tobacco companies to publish corrective statements that say they lied about the dangers of smoking and that disclose smoking’s health effects. [source: TIME] How can a liar convince others that he tells the truth?

Self-reference and Antiphasis

When you do not wish to be absolute, then you must not be absolute with the rule "I am not absolute" either.
You cannot escape the contradictions of self-reference.
But maybe you do not have to.
Maybe all you have to do is experience them.
And through your consciousness accept them.

Harmonia & Antithesis - The path to One

Αρμονία (En. harmonia) is what wise men seek. But why do we seek it? Why do people want harmony in their lives, why do they want harmony in their thinking?

Harmony is a weird thing.
You cannot have it unless you have met excess.

We seek harmony because we think we see it is the world.
But the world is most of the times an ugly place full of antinomies and misery.

We like harmony because we feel good when we have it.
So is harmony product of our selfishness?

Harmony is the way to unite opposites into One.
But if opposites are part of this world, could they also be part of Harmony in the cosmos?

If we think antithesis is an illusion,
why don't think the other way around - could Harmony be an illusion too?

Intuition tells us that the world is not as complicated or full of antinomies as mathematics think.
If something and its opposite are true, then maybe there is no antinomie at all.

"True" and "False" are human inventions.
I wouldn't trust them much...

Gnosticism and Alchemy

Alchemy was a spiritual practice cloaked under a science mantle. In his Alchemical Catechism, Paracelsus clearly denotes that his usage of the metals was a symbol: “When the Philosophers speak of gold and silver, from which they extract their matter, are we to suppose that they refer to the vulgar gold and silver? By no means; vulgar silver and gold are dead, while those of the Philosophers are full of life”… Jung, who studied alchemistical symbols extensively, visualized Alchemy as the “Yoga of the West”. The Alchemist passed with the help of transformations through various levels of enlightenment – until the final perfect, healthy, incorruptible, and everlasting state. According to many (Jung included) the evolution from ignorance to enlightenment described by Alchemy was based on the Gnosticism philosophy which managed to survive the purges from the Christian church by using encoded alchemistic texts.

The philosophy called Gnosticism is not an easy one to follow least of all to understand. The dogmas Gnostics believed to were mostly pre-philosophical and even they had a hard time even explaining them.
According to the Gnostics, this world, the material cosmos, is the result of a primordial error on the part of a supra-cosmic, supremely divine being, usually called Sophia (Wisdom) or simply the Logos. This being is described as the final emanation of a divine hierarchy, called the Plêrôma or “Fullness,” at the head of which resides the supreme God, the One beyond Being. The error of Sophia, which is usually identified as a reckless desire to know the transcendent God, leads to the hypostatization of her desire in the form of a semi-divine and essentially ignorant creature known as the Demiurge.

Our desire to “understand” is the main source of the paradoxes with which we are engulfed. And alchemy tried to fight these paradoxes by unifying all antinomies into oneness. Our eagerness to “know” has created our theories. Our theories have created imaginary notions like “time” or “change” (see Harmonia Philosophica). And our imaginary notions have created the antinomies which we cannot comprehend no matter how much we try.

We have to become more open-minded and LESS knowledgeable if we are to find the lapis philosophorum…

Philosophy Wire: The icebreaker, Arctic and antinomies...

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-04-14]: Russian arctic icebreaker Yamal is used to open the seaways in the North Arctic Ocean for the ships to pass through [source: CNN Edition]. In order to reduce carbon emissions (due to the smaller route the ships will follow), the ice in the Arctic Ocean must be broken... Antinomies everywhere... Who knows how many "Yamal" are required to open the waters of areas we are afraid to go so that we don't "disturb" the balance...
