Philosophy Wire: Staying alone. Learning to speak…

Toddlers are surprisingly good at processing the speech of other young children, according to a new study. And toddlers who have more exposure to other children, such as those in daycare, may be particularly good at certain word learning skills. [1] Interact with others. Learn how to speak. Stand up. Look the cosmos from above. It is not you who started speaking. The cosmos always did. It is you who started listening. But be careful. For the noise is covering up what you need to hear…

Philosophy Wire: Born. Flowing. Feeling cold. [Birth: From plasticity to stillness]

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2017-04-30]: Baby humans’ brain cells take a while to get situated after birth, it turns out. A large group of young nerve cells moves into the frontal lobe during infants’ first few months of life, scientists report in the Oct. 7 Science issue. The mass migration might help explain how human babies’ brains remain so malleable for a window of time after birth. [1] Initially we are born as no one. And then we become someone. Initially we are born as part of the cosmos. Like a fluid ready to flow everywhere, to fill in every space, we rush into life. But then we end up in a specific hole. And we remain there. Cold. Unseen. Afraid. We must be water again. And start flowing. The creek is very near. I hear it… Can you?

Philosophy Wire: Knowing…

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2017-02-13]: Spatial reasoning measured in infancy predicts how children do at math at four years of age, finds a new study. It provides the earliest documented evidence for a relationship between spatial reasoning and math ability. [1]

We learn math because we measure space.
But how can we measure?
How do we understand what “space” even is?
You can only know what you already know…

Philosophy Wire: Children and social interaction. Being still a child. Refusing to accept it.

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2016-08-30]: While sharing toys and fighting with each other, kindergarten children helped researchers understand the patterns and qualities of interactions in social groups. The results were much more complex than the scientists originally predicted. [1] How arrogant we are. We believe we are all too grown up. We believe we are too different from children. But every one of us was a child once. And is carrying what he thought and learnt when he was still laughing and crying in his mother’s lap. Every one of us is still a child. Refusing to accept that he is. We are not complex. We were complex as children. See the cosmos selfishly and you will see how you have not grown at all. You are the same stubborn child you once were…

Philosophy Wire: Babies. Young people. Old people. Who thinks more correctly? [Spoiler: Noone]

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2016-02-04]: Babies have logical reasoning before age one: Human infants are capable of deductive problem solving as early as 10 months of age, a new study by psychologists at Emory University and Bucknell finds. The journal Developmental Science is publishing the research, showing that babies can make transitive inferences about a social hierarchy of dominance. [1] Many people think that the young people do not think correctly. They do not know much. Young people on the other hand believe that the old ones do not think correctly. They know too much and they cannot accept new things. No one is thinking that thinking is the only hurdle towards understanding the cosmos. Because we all think too much…

Philosophy Wire: Listen to yourself. Speak! Behold the foundations of the universe!

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2015-12-23]: Babies' repetitive babbles, such as 'dada' or 'baba', are primarily motivated by infants' ability to hear themselves talk, say researchers. Infants with profound hearing loss who received cochlear implants to improve their hearing soon babbled as often as their hearing peers, allowing them to catch up developmentally. [1] In other words: We talk because we can hear! And not the other way around! We think because there is something to think about. We exist because something already exists. Try to find the foundations of everything. And you will end up hearing your self…

Philosophy Wire: Babies, a priori knowledge, life, philosophy...

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2014-05-11]: Babies can understand the difference between "alive" and "not alive" [1] Before we even start thinking, we know the answer to the most difficult problem of philosophy... Every thought you' ve made is useless. Stop analyzing things too much. You already know what you seek. All you have to do is to remember...

Philosophy Wire: Babies, adults and the journey towards objects.

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2014-02-19]: Researchers found that babies spent a whopping quarter of their time in the presence of a face. In contrast, adults are exposed to real faces only about 7 or 8 percent of their time (T.V., Facebook and billboard faces didn’t count), researchers claim after an experiment where a happy face camera was affixed to a headband for tiny little babies. [1] From focusing on persons to focusing on objects. From humans to machines. The history of philosophy. Through the eyes of a baby...
