Philosophy Wire: Life. Death. Earth.

A study has demonstrated a possible link between life on Earth and the movement of continents. The findings show that sediment (sediment is created when wind, water and ice erode existing rock or when the shells and skeletons of microscopic organisms like plankton accumulate on the seafloor.), which is often comprised from pieces of dead organisms, could play a key role in determining the speed of continental drift. [1] Walking on the past we are. Living on the remains of what is no more. Moving towards the future which has yet to come. Based on a past which is forever gone. Inside a world which started from nothing. Born out of chaos and order. Based on nothing and yet containing everything. Watch out not to burst that bubble of existence and let nothingness pure out. The mirror if filled with images. The soil is breathing again. A forest is growing. Can you listen to the echo of your own feet?

Philosophy Wire: Learning the future? There is no need. It has already happened.

Researchers have developed a robotic learning technology that enables robots to imagine the future of their actions, so they can figure out how to manipulate objects they have never encountered before. In the future, this technology could help self-driving cars anticipate future events on the road and produce more intelligent robotic assistants in homes, but the initial prototype focuses on learning simple manual skills entirely from autonomous play. [1] We try to anticipate the future in order to control it. But the future is just the result of our current actions. What will come in the next minute is linked to what has already came at the previous minute. Every time we try to predict we actually remember. What we did yesterday. That rainy day of graduation. During that sunny day in the funeral. At that nursing house. Eating your first chocolate. It is your future. Try to remember. You are alive. And you have already seen yourself die…

Philosophy Wire: Past. Present. Future. Video. MIT.

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2017-03-13]: MIT has used machine learning to create video from still images, and the results are pretty impressive. The system "learns" types of videos (beach, baby, golf swing...) and, starting from still images, replicates the movements that are most commonly seen in those videos. [1] Look at the sparrow flying. The past is not past. The future is already here. In our minds. The sparrow is gone. It was never here.

Philosophy Wire: Time capsules…

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2015-01-19]: People burring time capsules. [1] We all want to leave our mark in time. What we do not understand is that we have already left our mark. Find a real time capsule. Go back to the time when you lived. Find your self again. Convince him to destroy that time capsule. Stop wanting to live in the future. There is no future. There is no past. You live here and now. For ever.
