Philosophy Wire: “Instant learning”. Waves. Tuning. One.

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2016-06-19]: Scientists believe they may have taken the first steps towards making Matrix-style 'instant learning' a reality. A team of researchers from HRL Laboratories in California conducted experiments in which they studied the brain signals of trained pilots and attempted to 'transplant' them into the brains of beginners who were using a flight simulator. The technique is similar to that seen in 1999's The Matrix, in which the protagonist, Neo, learns Kung Fu in a matter of seconds after the knowledge is uploaded directly into his brain. The scientists measured the brain waves of the pilots as they flew in a flight simulator mission, and isolated signals which they believed corresponded to certain flying skills. 32 test subjects then flew the same simulated mission while having their brains stimulated with an electrode cap, in an effort to mimic what was going on inside the brains of the professionals. Surprisingly, the researchers found that the trainee pilots who had their brains stimulated performed much better in certain tasks than those in the control group, becoming 33 per cent more successful in their tasks by the end of the tests. As research scientist Dr Matthew Phillips explains, the learning mechanism used by the two groups was the same - even with stimulation, learning to fly a plane is a skill which takes months to build up. However, by using their stimulation cap, they managed to "amplify and boost" the subjects' learning. It's still very early days for the techology, and the team's study, published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, will need to be rigorously checked by the scientific community in the future. However, it's an exciting start. (1, 2)

We are part of One.

But we have learnt to think a lot. So we tune selectively with anything that interests us, thus destroying everything else. If we stop thinking, we will tune in with everything. And only then will we really become part of the cosmos.

Could God be the absolute nothing?
Could consciousness be the destruction of this One?
Should we die in order to live?

Think about it.
Or rather, do not think about it…

Philosophy Wire: Describing waves. Why do that?

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2016-06-15]: Two mathematicians have published a new paper that advances the math of describing a wave. [1] But why describe it? How much dull should we become in order to finally understand? Drowning at the sea. Admiring the silent ocean. Listening to the sound of waves. Sleeping by the water. Smelling the fresh air coming from the coast. Not describing anything. This is life. And true science is to understand the importance of all the above. With no equations. Put a coat. The breeze is chilling.

Philosophy Wire: Waves. Life. In sync.

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2014-08-03]: Neurons and cells which are synchronized. Neurons and cells which are synchronized in their de-synchronization. [1] From the heart to the brain, our whole life is determined by waves which run through our existence. Static waves. Waves running with the speed of light. Everything a sea. Each one of us a wave...

Philosophy Wire: Waves, de Broglie, Parmenides

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-04-03]: Recently, scientists managed to create a device which produces waves and can form any type of shape on the surface of the water by adjusting the superposition of those waves [source: AMOEBA 1, ΑΜΟΕΒΑ 2, AMOEBA MoMA]. The waves are extremely simple, beautiful and interesting as a phenomenon. A ripple on a fluid's surface can cause things that one can easily "see" as object, or "hear" as a sound. And they may explain many (if not all) of what we experience everyday. Any theory that says the world is "One" will surely find a great ally in waves. A theory based on waves can explain the world "as One", much more easily than any theory based on "atoms". A single reality through which waves propagate can - according to some - explain consciousness and even the observed phenomena of telepathy (see the Holographic Universe Theory for example). A single reality through which waves propagate can support Parmenides and the blinded modern science, which wants to analyze everything in components without knowing if this is even feasible or correct. The waves have energy, they can cuperimpose and create new waves or they can collide and nullify each other. From the theory of de Broglie that particles behave like waves to the current string theory, waves are still the only way where every "strange" idea of "unity" seems possible. Perhaps that is why we love so much looking at the waves of the sea and maybe this is why we are sometimes intimidated by the same waves at the ocean...
