Philosophy Wire: Known…

Neuroscientists find memory cells that help us interpret new situations. [1] But how else can you remember something? But by looking at something new? Something you never knew existed. The only thing that can remind you that there is nothing to remind you of. And by looking at what you did not know. You will know it. And at that exact moment. It will know you too…

Philosophy Wire: Fading away… Born…

Past events are often vividly recollected. However, it remains unclear how the qualities of memories are reconstructed. A new study finds that as time passes, the visual information that illustrates our memories fades away. [1] For it is not the what you see that matters. But what you feel and know. Look at the mirror. It doesn’t reflect anything. Except for the things which you have with you. Break the mirror. Blood on your hands. Someone died. Someone is born…

Philosophy Wire: Forgetting...

Choosing to forget something might take more mental effort than trying to remember it, researchers at The University of Texas at Austin discovered through neuroimaging. These findings, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, suggest that in order to forget an unwanted experience, more attention should be focused on it. This surprising result extends prior research on intentional forgetting, which focused on reducing attention to the unwanted information through redirecting attention away from unwanted experiences or suppressing the memory's retrieval. [1

We always try to remember things.
Without realizing that by doing that we forget what we knew.
There is no point to try to remember anything.

Just let go and you will feel it.
What you know is part of you already.
The cosmos is here and now.

Try to remember where you came from.
And you will immediately forget that you are already there…

Philosophy Wire: Losing memory… Gaining memory… Existing… Being…

Scientists trying to analyze changes when memory is lost in mice. [1] Missing the fact that changes also happen in the brain when memory is developing. Worshiping the capabilities offered by the cosmos, without realizing that they are also cages enslaving us into that very cosmos. Worshiping our self as it is mirrored on the surface of existence, without realizing that this enslaves us into that very surface. Breaking the eternal circle of existence is the only prerequisite of being. We have chosen to float because we are afraid of the depths of the abyss. And it is the cracks in the mirror which help us get a glimpse of our self as it truly is. Try to remember without remembering. And your failure to do so will help you remember everything…

Philosophy Wire: Speak clearly.

People tend to remember better things that are said to them in a clearer way. When a speaker is talking faster or failing to enunciate as crisply, listeners have to work harder to decipher what's being said. More mental resources, consequently, are drawn toward that task, leaving fewer resources available for memory consolidation. [1] Listen to the wind. Full and complete. Listen to the waves. Relaxed. Calm. Listen to nothingness. Into the raging sea. Killing the cosmos. Setting the universe on fire. For a butterfly to be born. For new beautiful flowers to spring out of the earth.

In a sunny afternoon.
The sun is so hot.
Listen to the raging grass…
An earthquake shaping the earth…
Is that clear enough?

Philosophy Wire: Brain simulation. Improving memory. Raising barriers.

The findings of a research are the first example of electrical brain stimulation in humans giving an event-specific boost to memory lasting until the next day, the scientists say. [1] It seems logical. The more you raise a barrier, the more it gets stronger. But is the existence of the barrier something good in the first place? Accepting the cosmos is actually hindered by a strong memory. Knowing the universe is hindered by knowledge. It takes a child to truly love. It takes a fool to understand everything. It takes a crazy person to question anything. It takes a man with no memories to remember who you truly are without them…

Philosophy Wire: Déjà vu… Not false memories. But memory conflict!

Work by psychology researcher Akira O'Connor suggested false memories may not be to blame for the phenomenon known as “Déjà vu”. Instead, it could be a sign of the brain checking its memory.

When presenting the findings at an International Conference on Memory in Budapest, O'Connor said he thinks the frontal regions of the brain could be flipping through our memories, then sending signals if there's a mismatch between what we think we've experienced and what we actually have experienced.

"Brain regions associated with memory conflict, rather than false memory, appear to be driving the déjà vu experience," O'Connor wrote in a blog post about the findings.

"This is consistent with our idea of déjà vu as the conscious awareness of a discrepancy in memory signals being corrected. This, in turn, sheds some light on why déjà vu occurrence appears to decline with age despite the fact that memory errors tend to increase with age. If it's not an error, but the prevention of an error, this makes a lot more sense”. [1]

Checking memories. Against what we know happened.
Feeling the conflict. And yet sensing… familiarity?

The solution to a problem which continuously evades solution might be the simplest and yet the hardest of solutions: That there is no problem. Human memory keeps creating more problems than the ones it solves. We are not to trust it. We do not know how it is formulated. More often than we would like to, it is lost. And yet, with this faulty memory, we are still here. Alive and kicking. Perhaps we should stop trying to remember. And try to be ourselves. Here and now.

I feel I have said that before…
But I do not care.

Philosophy Wire: Fragments of memory…

A study has identified a neural mechanism in humans that allows us to segment our experience in discrete memory units. According to the research, the brain identifies context changes as 'frontiers' in the flow of our experience and uses them to fragment the course of events into small units of memory that can be stored long-term. [1] The only way to understand the cosmos in our finite brain is by slicing it down into pieces. Because the infinite cannot fit in the finite. If we were to understand the cosmos as a whole, we would need to discard the one thing we appreciate the most: our brain. Everything cannot fit into something. It needs nothing to accept everything… Only zero can fit infinite… Only by forgetting everything can we remember anything… Keep slicing the pie into thinner pieces. Until you reach to the whole pie again…

Philosophy Wire: Storing memories. Into thin air…

One study suggests that the brain etches each memory into unique firing patterns of individual neurons. [1] Our whole life stored into patterns. Into structures. Only existing as potential, as ideas. Ghosts existing beyond existence, along with zero and one. Our whole life stored into thin air. Along with everything and nothing. A whole galaxy hides in the darkness. Waiting for the stars to flicker…

Philosophy Wire: Self-reference: The key to everything? [You are alone]

Researchers have pinpointed a brain region monkeys use to evaluate their ability to recall memories. To date, this metamemory process, which requires a higher level of self-reflection about our own cognition, was thought by some to be unique to humans, though this research suggests otherwise. [1]

Remembering based on what we… remember. Being ourselves because we are… ourselves. Consciousness defined based on… itself. Existence existing because it… exists. Self- reference is everything. It is as if everything is just… One. And everything we see and feel are just pointing all to the same direction, to the same clearing within the dark forest…

Nothing exists. It is just you. Alone…

Philosophy Wire: Cells. Memory. Mind. Oblivion.

Philosophy Wire: Stabilizing memories. Creating universes…

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2016-09-07]: Memories formed in one part of the brain are replayed and transferred to a different area of the brain during rest, according to a new study in rats. The finding suggests that replay of previous experiences during rest is important for memory consolidation. [1] We are kids thrown away to an unknown world. Scared from what they see. Tired. And yet we do not understand that it is us who create reality. Through what we see, through what we choose to see, through what se select to remember. Go to sleep my dear child. Sleep tight. Dream. And you will create the world. As it should be. As you wish.

Philosophy Wire: Remembering: Why?

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2015-10-13]: Another theory of where memory in human brain could reside. [1] We know nothing. We experience through the lenses of our brain. We are drops in the ocean. And yet we can “remember”? Why should we remember in the first place? What is the reason to remember? I am not talking about surviving, learning, adapting. These are too shallow notions. I mean, why do we remember anything if life’s purpose is death? What is the meaning of surviving if life’s purpose is extinction? Try to remember. There was a time when you knew everything. There was a time when you did not need to remember…

Philosophy Wire: Lost memories. Restored…

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2015-01-31]: New research indicates that lost memories can be restored, at least into a type of marine snail called Aplysia. [1] Yes, you guessed correctly. What is lost cannot be restored. Memory. The great dead-end of materialism. Remember. You are not only matter. You somehow already know that. Search what most people believe. They are all based on something...

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2015-01-04]: An international team of researchers has successfully determined the location, where memories are generated with a level of precision never achieved before. To this end the scientists used a particularly accurate type of magnetic resonance imaging technology. [1]

Philosophy Wire: The whole world inside a bacterium...

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2014-12-25]: Bacteria become 'genomic tape recorders', recording chemical exposures in their DNA. [1] But everything interacts with everything. Everything is stored as information into everything. The whole cosmos has memory of everything. Everywhere. It is as if everything just Is. Still in time. For ever. Inside a bacterium.

Philosophy Wire: Epigenetics. Memory. Body.

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2014-10-31]: A growing body of evidence suggests that environmental stresses can cause changes in gene expression that are transmitted from parents to their offspring, making 'epigenetics' a hot topic. [1] The body is slave to the spirit. Not the other way around. Give someone time to realize that. And his body will stop existing. Set of intentions we are. Pure will. Limited in a lifeless body...

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2014-07-09]: Scientists found how to erase and restore memories in rats. [1] Think about it. You turn on the computer. You turn off the computer. You delete a file. You restore a file. Does that mean that the computer does not use the cloud? (especially when in so many cases it has showed that it does? See here)

Philosophy Wire: Étienne. Spartans. You.

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2014-04-09]: Étienne Fourmont is famous for destroying all ancient Sparta monuments so that no other traveler could see them (!) and he could have all the glory for revealing Sparta to the future generations! [1] Some thing you can you destroy a whole people. That you can  erase it from collective memory. But how can you do that when everything that happened in the past is already an integral part of today? Perhaps all monuments of Sparta are destroyed, but we are all Spartans! And Athenians! And Corinthians! And...

Philosophy Wire: Memory, time, self-reference...

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2014-03-16]: Our memory does not work like a video camera. Instead, it inserts pieces of the present into the past when it creates memories. [1] The present determines the past, as the past determines the present as well. The future and our aspirations for it determine the present (see what the Chinese think about that), while the latter determines the former as well. Everything mixed together in a endless circle of self-reference. So irrational and yet, so familiar... [consciousness/ self-reference] You must forget about time if you with to understand him.
