Philosophy Wire: Expanding atoms… Expanding universe…

Researchers playing with a cloud of ultracold atoms uncovered behavior that bears a striking resemblance to the universe in microcosm. Their work, which forges new connections between atomic physics and the sudden expansion of the early universe, was published in Physical Review X and highlighted by Physics. In several sets of experiments, Eckel and his colleagues rapidly expanded the size of a doughnut-shaped cloud of atoms, taking snapshots during the process. The growth happens so fast that the cloud was left humming, and a related hum may have appeared on cosmic scales during the rapid expansion of the early universe - an epoch that cosmologists refer to as the period of inflation. [1]

Patterns everywhere.
Similarities and analogies.

Repetitions.
Parallel lines.

Mirrors reflecting the cosmos.
Playing no role at all.
Except to reveal what already Is.

A world crying in silence…
That it is not real…
Within a similar world, which is…

Philosophy Wire: Science jargon, complexity, voidness..

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2013-12-16]: An international team of scientists has shown for the first time that atoms can work collectively rather than independently of each other to share light. The researchers showed the sharing of light or "photon-mediated interaction" between artificial atoms confined to a one-dimensional quantum system. [1] Science has become complicated and void of meaning. Jargon not related to our every day life. Quantum mechanics is good. Being complicated is not a problem on its own. Not being able to talk into a way that others understand you IS a problem. And it really shows that YOU have not really understood what you have "discovered".

Philosophy Wire: Transubstantiation, atoms, scientism…

Non-believers are baffled by Christians believing they eat the blood and body of Christ during transubstantiation.

We can accept it as a metaphor, but not as something "real".
We cannot literally accept that we eat the blood and body of Christ.

What are we taking "literally"?
We see food and we think it is solid.
We think this "literally".

But food and matter is made up of atoms.
Atoms are almost made up of... nothing. They are mainly void space.
And even the small particles inside these atoms, are a matter of energy fields (call me Higgs) substantiating themselves into

something we have modeled as the "things" we call "particles".

So?

Come again?

What are we taking "literally"?
What is the right and wrong here?

We have been so much blinded by our faith in what Science has been TOLD US to believe, that we cannot accept anyone else believing anything else. As if we know everything...

Philosophy Wire: Protons, bricks, new bricks…

igp_1024x640_bi2005m03_0014_0001_di_v-640x440-600x275
Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2013-01-29]: A puzzle at the heart of the atom refuses to go away. The most precise measurement yet of the proton's radius confirms that it sometimes seems smaller than the laws of physics demand – an issue that has been hotly debated for two years. [source: 1, 2] A carefully founded building collapses when you remove even one brick. In this case of course the solution is known: we just invent new bricks to fill in the gap…

Philosophy Wire: What IS a particle? A surprisingly difficult (and immaterial) question…

particle_thumb
Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2012-12-27]: In modern physics a particle is an elementary piece of mass. But scientists do not know what mass is and only now they are starting to formulate theories about its true nature (see the Higgs boson for example). So again: a particle is an elementary… something which we do not know what it is exactly. And this… thing is the basis for our physics theories today. Materialists believe that everything is matter. But what is matter? The sum of various particles so vigorously studied by CERN? But again, the definition is not perfect. What is a particle for example? Energy? Wave? A wavefunction collapsing with conscious observation?

As Planck has said...

"As a man who has devoted his whole life to the most clear headed science, to the study of matter, I can tell you as a result of my research about atoms this much: There is no matter as such. All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter." [Max Planck, Das Wesen der Materie (The Nature of Matter), speech at Florence, Italy (1944) (from Archiv zur Geschichte der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Abt. Va, Rep. 11 Planck, Nr. 1797)]

Matter in today's science is more immaterial than the most pure spirit...

Scary, isn’t it? Or extremely liberating?

After all it was Bohr who said "Isolated material particles are abstractions, their properties being definable and observable only through their interaction with other systems.[...] We must be clear that when it comes to atoms, language can be used only as in poetry"...

And it was Werner Heisenberg who said "I think that modern physics has definitely decided in favor of Plato. In fact the smallest units of matter are not physical objects in the ordinary sense; they are forms, ideas which can be expressed unambiguously only in mathematical language"...

Philosophy Wire: Majorana, Being, One

6a00d8341bf7f753ef01676533b149970b-500wiPhilosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2012-12-23]: One of the biggest discoveries of 2012 was the discovery of the mysterious Majorana fermion, which was detected in a nanowire according to Dutch nanoscientist Leo Kouwenhoven. [source: 1, 2] These fermions are in the verge of matter and anti-matter: they are the anti-particles of them selves. As mysterious as the physicist who predicted their existence (Majorana disappeared during a boat trip leaving no trace at 1938), these particles may actually be the key to our understanding of the cosmos. Opposites being One. The essence of Being.

Philosophy Wire: All particles are discovered! Sleep tight!

Man has to awaken to wonder - and so perhaps do peoples.
Science is a way of sending him to sleep again.

Ludwig Wittgenstein

000329_medPhilosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2012-12-14]: Scientists announce with certainty that we have discovered all the basic particles in physics and that we do not expect any surprises in this area, with a confidence level of 99,9%. [source: web news, Physical Review Letters] When you are dominant you do not think at all of ways to cover or beautify your dogmatism. You just proclaim it with pride.

Philosophy Wire: WIMP, Dark Matter, scientific delusions…

The unknown is starting to take shape. The nameless gets named. WIMP is the name you will hear more often in the future when Dark Matter is analyzed… And rest assured that someday there will be experiments that will “find” it… Because when you look for something you always find it... ALWAYS. After all, after you have named a hypothetical particle only a small step separates you from “discovering” it: one single measurement [like this] which has a value near the one you expect suffices for you to start celebrating (see Higgs)…

Philosophy Wire: Higgs & Science as the new Religion…

ShowYourWorkPhilosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2012-07-05]: A Higgs boson-like particle discovery was claimed at LHC [source: BBC News].

In more detail:

I “predict” the existence of a particle which causes other particles to have mass, but without explaining how that particle has already mass (!!!) –> I take billions of Euro for research –> I conduct RANDOM collisions (too… scientific) between particles until I see in the detectors something which LOOKS LIKE having the same mass as the particle which I predicted (even though my theory DOES NOT predict a specific mass for that particle!!! – see BBC Higgs QA) while casually drinking coffee with my colleagues –> I conduct an announcement that I found something which LOOKS LIKE what I was searching for and continue the research –> I tag as “ignorant” whoever doubts me –> I take more billions –> I continue making random collisions until I find something else (does not matter what…) –> …

Science. Progress. Joy.
Who are we to doubt a new religion at its peak?

We really miss a mind like Nietzsche's (yes you ignorant human! Nietzsche was against science – see Nietzsche, an irrational believer!)

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2012-01-15]: Damien Hirst dots paintings are exhibited in Athens [source: web news]. Most of us suppose that our existence is based on unique elementary fundamental “things”… Call them “atoma”, call them “monads”, call them “dots”… The idea that everything consists of something which transcends the universe is universal… (as selling silly things for “art” is also universal in the “art financial market” of today…)

Philosophy Wire: Chi-b 3P, particles, sub-particles, sub-sub-particles…

hadroncolliderPhilosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-12-23]: Boson Chi-b 3P was discovered at CERN. However it is not a basic particle since it is constituted by two other particles [source: web news, BBC News]. Science has become so stupid, boring and disconnected from the real human needs. Particles consisted of other particles, which are consisted of other particles, which are consisted of other particles, which are…

Philosophy Wire: Particles, Light and the self-censorship of “current theory”…

_infog976Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-10-30]: Scientists who announced that sub-atomic particles might be able to travel faster than light (see Opera experiment) are to rerun their experiment in a different way, in order to verify the findings [source: BBC News]. Other scientists claimed that some kind of systematic error must exist in the experiment and the new trials will try to answer those claims. Verifying experimental results is good. However one must be aware of the other side of the coin: holding your self attached to the current established theory, makes you too reluctant to any new experimental result that could refute that theory. And this could be a good thing again (asking for objective data is the foundation of exact science after all – at least for the things that are in the scope of exact science see Religion and Science unification - Towards religional science), if that happened in a non dogmatic way. However calling any experiment that threatens your theory as “wrong” is near that thin line where dogmatism lies. And scientists should be very careful when treading near that line…

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-07-25]: Scientists from the Tevatron accelerator announced that they also see indications of the Higgs particle [source: BBC News]. Philosophy Wire: The solution of anti-matter mystery and the stupidity of tautology

historyofuniversePhilosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-07-02]: Scientists from the Tevatron accelerator claim that preliminary results show a possible explanation of the great mystery of why matter is much more than anti-matter in our Universe [source: BBC News]. When protons and anti-protons collide, new particles are formed which start decaying. Scientists claim they have found that some matter particles decay faster than other anti-matter ones. But what is that? Is that an explanation? Or merely a tautology? When you do not know why matter is more than anti-matter, is the claim “some matter particles decay slower than their anti-matter counterparts” a scientific explanation? Or do we just push back the problem to the previous step? If we ask “why is A > B”, is the claim “because A = C and C is greater than B” and explanation, or do we need to justify why C is greater than A also? Wittgenstein thought all mathematics is a mere tautology. What we learn today is that this may be applied to physics as well…

Philosophy Wire: The Committee, atoms and the “Existence” decree!

periodic-table-colour
Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-06-03]: The  International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry gave its final approval for the addition of 2 new elements into the periodic table [source: web news]. After that these two new elements officially “exist”, said the Union. This is how “reality” is dictated, ladies and gentlemen. With decrees and announcements. Leave the philosophy aside! If “Committee” doesn’t say so, it is not there!!!

PS. And with the ability to add as many electrons, protons and neutrons we want to, nothing can stop us! We will decide to make “existent” as many elements as we want!!!
