Philosophy Wire: Ceremonies. Sacred mountains. Big big telescopes.


Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2014-11-20]: A Hawaiian blessing ceremony came to an abrupt end before it could really get underway (on 7/10) because of protesters who oppose plans to build one of the world's largest telescopes near the summit of a mountain held sacred by Native Hawaiians. [1] We still have sacred things. They are just different than the things we used to hold as sacred. Science is more important than the superstitions of some indigenous people. And there will come a day when science is less important than the beliefs of our future selves. Jupiter exists. God exists. Philosopher's stone exists. Or nothing of these things exist. Make your choice.

PS. No, I am not implying that the existence of God is as irrational as the existence of Jupiter.  I am saying that Jupiter, as imagined by the ancient Greeks, existed. As God does. (but not as gravity does) Read about "existence" and "reality" in Harmonia Philosophica.
