Philosophy Wire: Feel the noise!

Adding noise to enhance a weak signal is a sensing phenomenon common in the animal world but unusual in manmade sensors. Now researchers have added a small amount of background noise to enhance very weak signals in a light source too dim to sense. [1]

Add noise.
Increase power.

Let me see.
I can see everything now.
There is not much to see.
Just a blur.

Let me see.
So much noise.
I can see it all now.
But I am missing.

The things which I should not see.
Don’t you see?
These are the ones we should.
Let me see now.

So much noise.
I can’t hear anything…

Philosophy Wire: Phantom noises. Democracy. Philosophy.

Millions of Americans hear ringing in their ears - a condition called tinnitus - but a new study shows an experimental device could help quiet the phantom sounds by targeting unruly nerve activity in the brain. Results of the first animal tests and clinical trial of the approach resulted in a decrease in tinnitus loudness and improvement in tinnitus-related quality of life. [1] Deciding that something heard by millions is something fake and “disturbing”. A decision made by those who do not hear it. Senses are the result of democracy. And democracy is the worst method to determine the truth regarding philosophical problems, let alone reality itself. You may make your phantom noises go away, but you will never really listen to what is out there. Only someone without ears (or without a brain to filter what ears capture) can experience the cosmos raw and untamed, as it truly is. Would you call the humming of birds and bees in a forest disturbing? Let’s vote. I don’t like birds and bees! I don’t see any birds or bees! Ah! The humming went away. Alas! And so did everything else…

Philosophy Wire: The man who listened to the Wi-Fi...

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2014-12-24]:

Frank Swain has been going deaf since his 20s. Now he has hacked his hearing so he can listen in to the data that circulate the wi-fi networks which surround us. [1]

Open your ears.
Listen well.
You can sense everything...
Start dancing.
Even if you cannot hear it,
the music has already started playing...

Philosophy Wire: Deaf mice. Hearing Pythagoras.

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2014-11-30]: Scientists have restored the hearing of mice partly deafened by noise, using advanced tools to boost the production of a key protein in their ears. [1] We want to hear things. We believe those who are deaf are unlucky. But the most important things are said in silence...
