Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-08-02]: UN Security Council failed to reach a consensus regarding sanctions on Syria. Russia, China and other countries are afraid that a UN Resolution against Syria might open the way for military action against this key Middle-East country. However can the great powers actually start another war? Do they have the money for a new war? Do they have the legal justification for a new war? It is not about nuclear weapons anymore (see Iraq). It is not even about world terrorism (see Afghanistan). If the UN gets involved in favor of every new revolution, where would that stop? It is sadly true that many Syrians are killed each day. But many US citizens are also dead every day due to lack of free healthcare. Should we impose sanctions on US as well? Well, better no. They have enough trouble getting cash to pay checks (let alone conduct a new war)... But should we not fight for human rights? Yes we should! But how many of us actually KNOW what happens in Syria? How many of us actually KNOW who fights against who in Syria? Tanks against citizens is a terrible thing. But an image alone may be misleading. Will actually the thousands of citizens on the Syrian roads be peaceful if they take over? And if all the innocent citizens are "fleeing in terror" [BBC News], against whom are those tanks fighting anyway? Let's stop discussing for things we cannot do (a new war), or for things we should not do (interfere everywhere and anytime in favor of anyone we wish in the name of "human rights", without having knowledge of what happens)...
