About the Holy Communion & Excuses...

In light of the coronavirus, many talk about the need to shut down churches, socialize only on the Internet, banish Christianity (interesting how more massive gatherings of Muslim communities in Europe have not gained so fierce enemies...) and declare Science as our new religion. For that reason I feel compelled to simply point out the following.

1. Science is ALREADY our new religion. For centuries now. So don't worry about this one. Nobody does anything unless they hear the priests bearing the name "scientist" today. And I mean no one. Even Hitler was listening to scientists when he conducted eugenics.

2. Yes we should be careful not to spread a virus if we are sick. This is not about science but about common sense. The kind of logic that all people have. I mean mainly those people who believe that the world exists because someone made it (and not by accident), those who do not believe in an infinite number of universes that exist simply because someone wrote it in a scientific paper. But let us not get carried away from the subject... The Archdiocese in the US has made an interesting and logical announcement I think for that matter, which you can find here.

3. Priorities: What is more important? To close the subway or stop the Holy Communion? Shut down buses and workplaces or stop Holy Communion? How many will get sick by commuting in the subway and how many by the Holy Communion? Why do we always get into church matters first and foremost? Is the Church really so powerful today? Are there so many believers?

4. Scientific data: Despite what many people believe, science is not clear on the matter. There are scientific researches which claim that Holy Communion does not transmit diseases. I hereby enclose a related scientific research which you can find here. As the research concludes: "In conclusion, there is experimental evidence suggesting that sharing a communion cup contaminates the wine and cup. However, there has never been a documented case of illness caused by sharing a chalice reported in the literature". Let everyone decide on their own and on the data they have at hand, but let us stop tagging people who will go to Communion as "obscurantists" so easily.

5. Other information: At times, there were priests who used to associate with leper and people with tuberculosis, to which they offered communion as well. Nothing happened. (you can easily find those cases on Google yourself) And this is another scientific indication (for what else is science than extracting conclusions based on systematic observation) that things are not so dangerous as people believe they are. I am not saying to go or not go to religious practices during a pandemic. And even if you believe, you might be humanly afraid to go - let's not forget that Peter himself denied Jesus out of fear. This decision you will make based on your doctor's advice (or the guidelines issued by your government). I am saying however that things are not as black and white as atheists claim they are.

6. Mystery: And I am not even going into the metaphysical issues about what the mystery and what the Holy Communion really means, the body and blood of Christ, et cetera. If you do not believe in these things, leave them where they are. Others believe them. And not because they are stupid. But because they are not. And they like the philosophy a little bit. Ah, and because they do not stupidly believe that there is only matter in the universe.

But again, I get away from the issue at hand.

Maybe again, this is the issue!

Philosophy Wire: Being homosexual. The church. Hypocrisy. Love.

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2015-04-26]: A kid killed himself probably because he was laughed at for being gay. [1] At least this was what most people thought at the time, since later it was discovered that this was probably not the case. But the important news is that a priest talks about the “deadly sin” of homosexuality a few days later. [2] But judgement does not belong to us. It belongs to God. We have lost our way. Christ said “Do not judge” and yet we do only that. Christ said to love your enemy and yet we cannot even love our children. People with imperfections we are all. Even the Apostles. And only with love do we complete ourselves. Do we complete each other. Fill in our voids. Become One. Perfect…

Philosophy Wire: Nazis - Time to forgive?

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2013-11-09]: Where should we bury that Nazi? Our society cannot accept his body. Nor can our church! [1] You see Jesus may have forgiven the sinners who were crucified with him, but modern church has politics to think about. You may claim "forgiveness for everyone" as long as you do not practice it... Modern society does not have room for forgiveness. Even after you are dead.

Philosophy Wire: Jesus and iPad: A blessed incompatibility!

church_wifiPhilosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2013-04-17]: A church has handed out tablets instead of hymn books - but not stone ones etched with the 10 commandments: these are Android fondleslabs whose pinch-to-zoom feature is a godsend for elderly parishioners. The first tab-equipped Church of England congregation at St John's Church in Mickleover, near Derby, clutched Archos tablets as backups for the church's existing projection screens, allowing the most myopic of Christians to follow the service and sing along during the important bits. [source: web news] For those of you who got excited with these news, think again. The essence of the church are its teachings, not the Android operating system it uses on its tablets. The secularization of the metaphysical will cause nothing but harm, since it will make church to lose sight of its primary goal and get involved with stupidities. It does not matter in which font or in which tablet you will read the Mysteries of the Church or cryptic advice like “love your enemy”, if you are not ready to really listen. As if there were not any elderly people at the time of the first Christians…

Philosophy Wire: New Pope, new messages… [TBV]

_66429876_66429875Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2013-03-16]: The new Pope began his tenure coming out on the balcony and asking the faithful crowd to bless him, instead of the opposite which happened until now. He continued with some very correct messages. [source: BBC News] He talked about his vision for a "poor church for the poor". He said even the obvious that so many Catholics have forgotten: that "Christ is the leader of the Church, not the Pope". Perhaps he who bares the name of that young man from Assisi who became synonymous with poverty and peace, will give a new air to a weary Vatican. It remains to be seen in the course of the years to come. Sometimes seeking Poverty is the way to become wealthy…

Philosophy Wire: Stealing, confessing, forgiving…

tumblr_ls9bjsV6ik1qbhp9xo1_1280Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2012-12-12]: A man who stole a valuable antique religious picture confessed his act to Church, thus helping authorities locate it (even though damaged beyond repair since it was thrown to the water after it was stripped from all precious metals). [source: web news] Religious practices(with which we may laugh now) can be surprisingly effective. Forgiving is an essential part of Christian religion. And if practiced correctly it could lead to police being totally useless. If only more of us were practicing it…

Philosophy Wire: Pope, sainthood and (wrong?) decisions

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-05-01]: Pope John-Paul the 2nd is on his way to sainthood. Does the church decide and people just follow, or is it the people who formulate the reality of the church? Is sainthood a matter of "definition"? Is saintgood a matter of decision? Too bureaucratic and down-to-earth to be true...

Philosophy Wire: The Vatican, Cosmology and the Science-Religion relationship

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-02-22]: The Vatican state will soon operate a Cosmology Internet Portal, aiming to show that religion and science are friends and not enemies [source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12244279]. It is true that many people have invested in the so called "war" between science and religion. Think honestly: how many of us go to the church in order to be updated on the latest scientific developments? And on the other hand: how many of us go to a scientific lab in order to get confort, human love and guidance? Science are religion are two tools which are both very useful in their own scope. As Einstein said, "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind"...

Philosophy Wire: The Church, iPhone and Heidegger...

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [07/02/2011]: The Catholic Church approved a new iPhone application in which the user can electronically prepare himself for confessession, making a list of his sins [1]. The application is not intended to replace the confession, but simply to help people come closer to the Mystery. So far one man admitted that using the application made him go back to confession after 20 years. Can Church and IT work together? Can such a deeply human process, as confession, be conducted with the help of technology? Man must return to earth and find the "clearing" to which the Thinker Heidegger was referring to so many times... And the realization of Dasein through "Sorge" cannot be done with "things" (αντι-κείμενα)!
