Philosophy Wire: East Germany, Stasi, the illusion of freedom.

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2013-10-01]: We feel sorry for the people who lived in East Germany, with Stazi watching them all the time. We feel sorry that they were not free. However we too are affected by what we are taught. We too are affected by what we are told. Let me tell you one thing: The FIRST step for not being free, is believing that you are…

Philosophy Wire: Eichmann, ethics, causes…

Adolf_Eichman_at_Trial1961
Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2013-05-24]:

Eichmann: I am not an anti-Semite.
A truth we cannot accept. [1]
We want to believe that dreadful deeds need a cause.
We are frightened to the possibility that such a cause does not exist...

Philosophy Wire: Germans, Nazi, good, bad…

arendt1Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2013-05-18]: Germany 1939-1945. Weird… The good and law-abiding are the bad. The bad are the good. [1]

Philosophy Wire: Are you poor? Eat horse and shut up!

1733B7C3203498F1720E5989188F50B9Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2013-02-23]: Germany's development minister has suggested food tainted with horsemeat should be distributed to the poor.Dirk Niebel said he supported the proposal by a member of the governing CDU party, and concluded: "We can't just throw away good food".  [source: BBC News] Instead of fighting the problems, politicians want to avoid them. Instead of helping their citizens, they just want to help their friends. With all worthy people already leaving Europe or not having the time to do anything else but work, politics in Europe has become a means to promote stupidity, mediocrity and cunningness...

Philosophy Wire: Unemployed or Prostitute? Decide!

minka-dumont-kelly-american-actress-supermodel-sexiest-womanPhilosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2013-02-10]: A German job center has tried to line up a position for a young woman in a brothel. A German job center is calling it an "oversight," but the young woman in question isn't taking it lightly. A 19-year-old woman in the southern German city of Augsburg had been hunting for a job for months before the local, government-run job center contacted her about a potential position. "I was absolutely outraged," the newspaper quoted the woman as saying. "My mother immediately screamed when she saw the letter". [source: web news] This is actually not the first time something like that happens in Germany. Some years ago another young woman faced the threat of losing her unemployment benefits if she did not accept a job offer to work as a prostitute!!! (see here) Our civilization has progressed. And we have now learned that work is no shame. Or maybe some kinds of work are? How much do we really mean it when we refer to equality or when we defend the right of hookers to work? (prostitution is legal in Germany) How much hypocrites are we when we say that we would get any job if we were left unemployed? Perhaps the difference between “civilized” and “uncivilized” is that the latter cannot lie so good as we can…

Philosophy Wire: Germans forget Auschwitz! Should they?

Hitler at May Day celebrations in Olympic stadium 1939aPhilosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2012-01-28]: One in five Germans does not know what happened in Auschwitz [source: web news] !!! It is remarkable how extremely important events can be forgotten after only one generation. As Hitler once said it is a matter of genes. Is it a random event the fact that both World Wars so far have been initiated by the same nation? Maybe they need a Third World War and another 20 million dead people in order to refresh their memory…

Philosophy Wire: Mein Kampf and Germany which does not learn…

hitler and his dog at the balcony
Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2012-01-16]: Germany tries to ban the publication and circulation of Mein Kampf at German stores by a British editor [source: Reuters News]. Once more Germany lives in a world of its own. Anyone can find that book from the Internet and they are still struggling against its publication… Maybe they still haven’t learned that educating ethics to people is the way to go, not giving them orders…

Philosophy Wire: Germany, Doom and the Doom of Stupidity

Doom_imagem_4Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-09-02]: Germany lifted the ban of game Doom, after 17 years [source: BBC News] !!!!!!!!!!!! The country which had no problem electing, following and dying for Hitler, had issues accepting the existence of an electronic game with… 1x1 m pixels (while of course at the same time had no problem invading Afghanistan). Progress? Or boundless hypocrisy? I will go for Door No. 3: sheer stupidity! People who make decisions are still far away from the reality people live. And this is always dangerous.

Philosophy Wire: Germany, the deficits and the EU (third) destruction...

Philosophy Wire: 2010-11-17 Politics is about wise long-term thinking and not about childish short term thinking. What does a country think and plan when it decides to be part of something like the EU? Germany thinks it is not fair to help other European countries with their deficits. Germans seem to forget how they made their money from those countries in the most recent past. Germans have had great growth, but on the expense of other smaller EU countries. Germans have had great growth, but without paying anything to their workers as a reward. And when troubles came to their door, they just play deaf. Right? Wrong? Or catastrophic? Germans have destroyed Europe twice so far. Now they will do it for a third time. They will do it "peacefully", but they will still do it...

Philosophy Wire: The Lisbon Treaty, the economy and the right to vote

Philosophy Wire: 2010-10-28 Germany and France are trying to pass a change to the Lisbon Treaty, according to which countries having excess buget deficits will lose the right to vote. The economic deficits due to the global economic crisis seem to lead to deomocracy deficits, in favour of the economically powerfull. So now, the coutry which was responsible for 2 World Wars and the country which is now deporting immigrants (Roma), are now giving people lessons of tyranny. It is true that the budget deficit is very important in a capitalistic economical system. But economy is not everything! The right to vote - despite of the economic status - is something earned with many struggles over the last years. And this right is responsible for the progress of humanity in those last years. Who is Merkel to say otherwise?
