Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2013-02-10]: A German job center has tried to line up a position for a young woman in a brothel. A German job center is calling it an "oversight," but the young woman in question isn't taking it lightly. A 19-year-old woman in the southern German city of Augsburg had been hunting for a job for months before the local, government-run job center contacted her about a potential position. "I was absolutely outraged," the newspaper quoted the woman as saying. "My mother immediately screamed when she saw the letter". [source: web news] This is actually not the first time something like that happens in Germany. Some years ago another young woman faced the threat of losing her unemployment benefits if she did not accept a job offer to work as a prostitute!!! (see here) Our civilization has progressed. And we have now learned that work is no shame. Or maybe some kinds of work are? How much do we really mean it when we refer to equality or when we defend the right of hookers to work? (prostitution is legal in Germany) How much hypocrites are we when we say that we would get any job if we were left unemployed? Perhaps the difference between “civilized” and “uncivilized” is that the latter cannot lie so good as we can…
