Philosophy Wire: Brain. Voice. Speaking. Silence.

A particular neuronal circuit in the brains of bats controls their vocalizations. Based on the rhythm with which the circuit oscillated, researchers were able to predict the kind of sounds the bats were about to make. These research results could contribute to a better understanding of human diseases in which language is impaired such as Parkinson's or Tourette syndrome. [1]

People always wanted to speak.
Especially because there is another way to convey messages.
And they prefer being silent.

By speaking a lot.
Listen.
There is nothing to listen to.

Because no one speaks to speak. But to be heard…

The pronunciation paradox.

Photo by Spiros Kakos @ Pexels

Learners of foreign languages can hear the errors in pronunciation that fellow learners tend to make, but continue to fall foul of them themselves despite years of practice. A new study of shows that everyone believes their own pronunciation to be best. (1)

Listen.

Listen.

Listen.

Listen.

Listen.

Listen.

Listen.

Listen.

Listen.

Listen.

Listen.

Listen…

Do you see?

Think of it too hard and you will not be able to. For listening entails speaking. Speaking the same things that others say inside your own head. You only do that only when others speak. But when you do speak at the end, there is no sound to listen to. It is just you and the cosmos.

Shaped in silence.

Out of your every word…

Philosophy Wire: Staying alone. Learning to speak…

Toddlers are surprisingly good at processing the speech of other young children, according to a new study. And toddlers who have more exposure to other children, such as those in daycare, may be particularly good at certain word learning skills. [1] Interact with others. Learn how to speak. Stand up. Look the cosmos from above. It is not you who started speaking. The cosmos always did. It is you who started listening. But be careful. For the noise is covering up what you need to hear…

Philosophy Wire: Adapting… Being… Seeing…

Brains of blind people adapt to sharpen sense of hearing, study shows. [1] Listen. For you are not seeing very well. Think. For you cannot hear anything. Feel. For you have lost connection with the cosmos. Die. For the only thing remaining is you. In a closed room, silence... For you to start speaking again…

Philosophy Wire: Speak fast. Speak slow. All the same.

Fast talkers tend to convey less information with each word and syntactic structure than slower-paced speakers, meaning that no matter our pace, we all say just about the same in a given time, according to a study. [1] Universe has balance. Learn how to speak. And as you learn, the more you will learn how to be silent. Learn to be silent. And as time passes, you will learn how to talk again…

Philosophy Wire: Listen to yourself. Speak! Behold the foundations of the universe!

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2015-12-23]: Babies' repetitive babbles, such as 'dada' or 'baba', are primarily motivated by infants' ability to hear themselves talk, say researchers. Infants with profound hearing loss who received cochlear implants to improve their hearing soon babbled as often as their hearing peers, allowing them to catch up developmentally. [1] In other words: We talk because we can hear! And not the other way around! We think because there is something to think about. We exist because something already exists. Try to find the foundations of everything. And you will end up hearing your self…

Philosophy Wire: Speak! With no talking…

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2015-03-25]:

The brain's speech area, named after 19th century French physician Pierre Paul Broca, shuts down when we talk out loud, according to a new study that challenges the long-held assumption that 'Broca's area' governs all aspects of speech production. [1]

Most things are said in silence.

Every time you speak you (literally and metaphorically) stop talking.

Sit under the tree.

Let the sun burn you. Even the greatest philosopher sounds stupid next to the silent breeze…

Philosophy Wire: Voice. Silence. Important things.

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2014-04-27]: People lending their voice to speech impaired individuals. [1] We strive so much to hear what others say that we do not give attention to what is really important: what they do not say. Everything important is not conveyed by words but by the absence of them... Listen to the silence...
