Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-03-21]: In a poll conducted for the Greek Ministry of Education, students responded to what courses they would like to be taught in schools. The results are hardly encouraging: mathematics and computer science came first, while art and music classes last (source: ethnos.gr article). The lack of aesthetic education is the worst kind of regression. A man who knows music does does not know and does not want to even come into contact with art, how is he different from an animal? Life is not only computers and engineering. Life is love, eros, compassion, emotion. And those you can not find in an equation... However the saddest thing in this case is not the plight of young people, but that of the elder ones. As Elizabeth Kapu'uwailani Lindsey said in a recent interview (see edition.cnn article) in a society that celebrates youth, we have forgotten the wisdom of old age. When have you heard again the elders asking young people what they want to learn?
