Philosophy Wire: Pussy Riot, art, “art” and the hypocrisy of International Amnesty

DSC00978
This IS art. Pussy Riot in a church is NOT!
Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2012-08-17]: Three members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot have been jailed for two years after staging an anti-Vladimir Putin protest in a Moscow cathedral. Judge Marina Syrova convicted the women of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred, saying they had "crudely undermined social order" [source: web news]. The lawyers of the band say they will appeal in European courts for the case. It is also noted that International Amnesty has sent a letter of protest to the Russian embassy in London. Where is true art anyway?!?!? How can any idiot SMALL person who THINKS is an artist just get into churches and offend anything he or she likes without expecting to be punished or experience a reaction to his action? Where have true artists gone? And what the hell has the International Amnesty to do with this? If someone broke into the Dawkins Foundation and sketched Christian crosses on the walls and then was punished, would the Amnesty take a similar stand? Who the fuck would know Pussy Riot had it not been for this (and the stupid name they have)? Freedom and Art is not the same as “Doing anything I want” and “Doing bullshit”. We must all understand that.
