Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-05-30]: The formation of the islands of Hawaii has always been a mystery for scientists. The prevailing theory is just stupid: according to that theory the islands are created by a stable column of magma which presses the Earth's crust upwards, even though the mantle moves on that magma (see figure) [source: web news]. The impressive is that a new theory proposed by MIT scientists is accepted with reservations (!!!) by geologists. When your mind is stuck with something you have learned for years, it is difficult or even impossible to change… How many similar stupid theories do we accept because “the scientists say so” ?
