Philosophy Wire: Let your child do anything it wants... (and become stupid)

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-05-11]: The Americans are talking in CNN about whether they should be more strict with their children, asking even "why should they spend the summer as holiday?", after the results of international learning competitions where American students' position got worse as compared with last year. [CNN News] Being rigor with children has been the subject of controversy on several occasions. The new trend wants children to have only rights and no obligations at all. If the child wants to play, let's play. It should "develop its personality"... If the child does not want to read say nothing. You will "hurt its feelings"... Anything for the children. But if we do not teach anything how will they learn? If you do not lead them, how will they find their way? Oppression is harmful, but the same is absolute freedom. Honestly, how many of us would we choose to read by ourselves if we were asked when we were young?
