Philosophy Wire: Commitment. Resolution. Weakness.

It's mid-February, around the time that most people waver in their commitment to the resolutions they've made for the new year. Many of these resolutions require us to forego a behavior we want to engage in for the one we think we should engage in. In a new report, leading researchers in behavioral science propose a new framework that outlines different types of self-control strategies and emphasizes that self-control entails more than sheer willpower to be effective. [1] Shallow men. Seeing everything as complicated. But can there be anything simpler than breaking down something in parts? Lost men. Failing to see that there are no parts, no “you” and the “cosmos”. Can there be anything more complicated than that? Weak men. Failing to see that it is not their will against the tide of the universe. But that the path is free and open for you to do anything you want. Can there be anything more difficult than that?
