Philosophy Wire: Toulouse, perception, living, dying

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2012-03-22]: Authorities in Toulouse are not sure whether the man responsible for the recent massacre is dead or alive in his under-siege apartment [source: web news]. How do we “know” something? How do we “know” that someone else is alive? If we are just based on the input from our sensors, then how do we “certain” that someone else exists when we do not see him? How do YOU know “know” that your friend(s) are alive or dead?
