Philosophy Wire: Fish, tools and the uniqueness of Humans

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-07-11]: Researchers found out that some fish are using tools, as primates do [source: web news]. The things that we thought differentiated humans from animals (like the use of tools or the ability to solve logical problems) are getting fewer and fewer. But are those things really the things that differentiate us from other animals? Or are these the things modern dogmas want to promote as the really important differentiators? Imagination, intuition and fundamental irrationality are the things which actually distinguish a human from a fish or a monkey. Not the ability to hit something with a rock to make it open… The ability to create things as illogical as poetry and our crying when reading such a poem, are the things which makes us humans… Not the fact that we can hit an oyster in order to open it…
