Philosophy Wire: Aquila, scientists on trial and the irresponsibility of the New Religion…

aaa2Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-05-30]: Scientists in Italy pass through trial, charged with manslaughter because of the statements they made to calm down and reassure the people at Aquila just a few days before the devastating earthquake which cost the lives to 309 people [source: web news]. The scientific community is arguing that this is an unacceptable persecution of science. A new Holy Inquisition? Or maybe finally science has met what it should have meet many year ago: a just and fair treatment. When you claim that you can make “predictions”, isn’t it fair to be attacked when you do not deliver that “precision”? “But earthquakes cannot be predicted” someone might argue. Correct. But if this is the case, then maybe scientists shouldn’t be so eager to make public statements about there being no danger of an earthquake just two days before the earthquake. But as we have said before, Science is the New RELIGION. And the new religion cannot be questioned. Not even when it makes a mistake!
