Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-03-11]: This year's Turing Award was given to a professor at Harvard, "whose work laid the foundations for machines that learn and imitate human thought" [source: web news]. Very interesting news to think about. But... wait a minute! Have we discovered how the human mind works, so that we can know when a machine imitates it ?!?!? How much arrogance can we afford by "scientists" whose main characteristic is supposedly to "not be dogmatic" ? Philosophy has for centuries failed to find a solution to the question, while an increasing number of scientists (with Penrose leading the way) believe that human thought is non-algorithmic but based on quantum phenomena of superposition, based also on the theorem of non-completeness by Godel (see Philosophy of Science and Religion). Less arrogance, more objectivity, is always better... It is not certain that computers have started thinking like people, but certainly some people make every effort to think like computers...
