Philosophy Wire: Number pi, mathematics and the existence of irrational numbers

Number "pi" (Greek "π") is celebrating today. The most famous number in mathematics, has become a subject of discussion and analysis for aeons. From the agony of Pythagoras for the existence of numbers that can not be written, to the conficts between Kronecker and Cantor as to whether "pi" exists, irrational numbers have always been an interesting topic of analysis. Mathematics is considered by some the most "pure" science. But mathematics is where we have found the most phenomenal antinomies. How can we say that a number whose digits we do not know and cannot write "exists" ? And if the digits of that number are infinite, what does this mean for that "knowledge" we claim we have? In any case the mere analysis of an entity that has proven to be an irrational is ultimately a great accomplishment... The impact of this in philosophy can only be left to the imagination (and personal views) of each one of us...
