Philosophy Wire: China, Twitter and the right to (mis)information


Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-01-26]: China decided to block the user searches on Twitter concerning Egypt. When a Twitter user is looking for anything with the word "Egypt" in the query text, a simple message "According to relevant laws, regulations and policies, the search results are not shown" is returned to him, as the popular tweets page is state controlled. [source: ZDNet news] Is access to information a human right? Everyone in the West scream "Yes" and condemn China for its data filtering practices. But how many Western governments are already filtering information on the Internet in a completely transparent way?
