Philosophy Wire: Volvo, cars without drivers and the "dark side" of technology
Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-01-20]: Volvo company is experimenting with a technology that will enable the creation of car convoys: only the leading car will require a human driver, while the following cars will detect the movement of the leader electronically and its passenger could take a nap while traveling with 100 kph! Volvo estimates that this technology can be available in the next 10 years. [source: http://news.in.gr/science-technology/article/?aid=1231074996] Technology is here to help us. But how good is it for us to give all control to a machine? How good is it for us to let the machine “act”? Are there limits to what we want the machines to do? Would we want them to make children for us in the future? Would we want them to be judges instead of humans in the future? Where do we draw the line?
