Philosophy Wire: The new prototype kilogram, the subjectivity of reality and the oppression of "definitions"

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-01-24]: The scientific community is searching for a new definition of the kilogram, since the prototype kilogram stored in a vault in the BIPM in Sevres is losing weight! [source: web news] The current prototype has lost about 50 micrograms since it was first cast in 1879 (the weight of one grain of sand) and scientists are now looking towards the use of Planck’s constant for the new definition of kilogram. Philosophy has for long stated that what we perceive as “Reality” is very much subjective. And when we define things we will always be reminded of that… Humans define what they want in any way they wish and we should never forget that. A different definition gives different meaning to things we thought as “real”. How many definitions haunt your life?
