Philosophy Wire: 2010-10-23 The Greek prime minister said that the coming municipal and prefectural elections in Greece are actually a referendum for the Memorandum Greece has signed with the EU and IMF. What is the meaning of a referendum for something that has already been done? What is the meaning of a "democracy" which thinks that congressmen have something like a "blank cheque" when elected and that people can exercise their "rights" every 4 years or so? Difficulties in the application of direct democracy sound really silly in the Internet era, as silly as the gallups that resulted in the conclusion that Greek citizens actually "wanted" to have their wages cut due to money taken from politics and EU companies doing "business" with the "bankrupt" country...
